Joy Part 6 – Joy in Compassion

In part 6 of our series on Joy.  The very caring and inspiring Jo Spicer gives a powerful message titled Joy in Compassion.

In this talk Jo unpacks what compassion means, not just looking at today’s understanding but what was originally meant by the Hebrew word for compassion (Rakhum).

Jo encourages the listener that compassion should be described as an ‘action’, and that with compassion it is to care for others and mirror God’s love for them. But it is also just as important to be compassionate on ourselves, allowing God to lavish his love and care on us.

Jo challenges the listener to consider a week of compassion, to do something that you do not already do.

Jo’s ideas for compassion

Compassion for Yourself:

  1. Speak to yourself for a whole day as God would speak to you.
  2. Eat and drink as God as a lovely parent would want for you to keep yourself healthy.
  3. Spend more time with God.
  4. Ask someone for help.
  5. Get enough sleep.
  6. Distance yourself from things that may seem abusive.

Compassion for Others:

  1. Text someone to say that you are thinking of them.
  2. Tell someone why you love them or something they have done that makes you smile.
  3. Give a stranger a bunch of flowers.
  4. Pay for someone else’s shopping.
  5. Write someone a letter, draw them a picture.
  6. Reach out to someone you know is hurting.
  7. Cook someone a meal.
