Why did Jesus have to die?

A powerful reflection on the cross…. ‘God is not to be understood in terms of glory and power and might at Calgary, but God was in Christ suffering in solidarity with all of humanity’.  Stef argues that the death of Jesus is squarely put on the shoulders of humanity, that we don’t find God being complicit in the death of Jesus.  Only when we come to the cross and allow all our preconceived concepts about who God is do begin to understand what is going on at the cross. Stef leaves us to consider the role of humanity, of ourselves, in making a victim of Jesus, but in the light of Jesus’ forgiveness of and redemption of mankind from our scapegoating systems, from the human construction of punishment and violence.
